INTODUCTION OF HAIR TRANSPLANT-

Hair transplant is a procedure in which hair loss and baldness is treated with the help of surgery in which scalp is removed from back and sides of head and is implanted in bald spots in front and top of the head. It is a cosmetic procedure generally performed on men and rarely on women who suffers alopecia , thinning hair , bald spots where hair no longer grows in the spot. Hair loss and baldness in men are due to genetic factors and age of the individual . the baldness pattern in men gradually recedes to more and more exposure of forehead which is the most common form of baldness. They also experience a gradual thinning of hair at the crown and very top of the skull . The hair loss in women is generally due to  hormonal changes and thinning of hair from entire head . Transplants can be done to replace hair loss due to injury , burns or scalp diseases . Hair transplantation surgery is done by physician with specialty in plastic surgery or dermatology . Every surgery lasts 2 to 3 hours in which approximate. 250 grafts will be transplanted . A moderately balding individual (men) require up to 1000 grafts to get appreciable coverage of a bald spot . therefore a series of surgeries are  required over a period of 3 to 4 months.The person may be awake during the surgery with just local anaesthetic drug applied to the bald spot of the scalp. Some of them may be given drug to make them relax that puts them to sleep. Generally in transplant procedure they use thin strip of hair and scalp from back of the head , this strip is cut into smaller group of 5 to 6 hairs. Tiny slits are created in the bald spot of the scalp and the clump is implanted in that area. The doctor will try to recreate a natural looking hairline along the forehead. Micrograft ,  mini-graft , implants of single hair follicles used to fill larger implant sites to provide natural looking hairline. The implants can be arranged so that thick and thin hairs grows in the same direction .

The another type of hair transplant surgery known as scalp reduction. It involves removing of the skin from the bald spot . The process involves removal of skin from the bald area and stretching nearby hair covered scalp. Insurance (health) will not pay for hair transplants performed for cosmetics reason . The procedure does not create new hair it distributes the hair over the spot . For example the chest hair also gets transplanted onto the scalp.

On an estimate according to biennial survey found that about 3,97,048  hair transplant surgery were performed in 2014 and from that value 34% of  surgery are performed by Ahmedabad clinic only.  PREPARATION

Hair transplant is simple procedure in which risks are hand in hand with any surgery. Physician should be informed about medications being used and previous allergy to drugs . Blood clotting disorders people also need to inform their physician about the procedure which is to be performed

It is as important as to find experienced surgeon  and to discuss the results expected before surgery . The patient may require to do blood test to check for clotting or bleeding  , it is advised not to take aspirin tablets prior to surgery . The type of drug  or anaesthesia used depends on the extensiveness of the surgery and the arrangements required for which it is to performed . The patient may be awake during the process but generally medication is given to the patient for relaxation . At the surgery site a anaesthetic agent or drug is applied to numb the spot where it will be injected into the skin .

POST TREATMENT

The spot involved should be bandaged overnight. The patient can return to daily routine within a day. Strenuous work should be avoided in the initial stage post surgery. In few cases the implants can be ejected from the spot during strenuous exercise. There may be headache , swelling and discomfort around the bald spot and  the eyes. These signs can be controlled with a mild pain which can be relieved by aspirin. There are many forms at the graft sites where it should not be scraped off and might be numbness at the spot but it will diminish in 2 to 3 months.

RISKS-

Generally, the major risk is that spot on the scalp where the area might not look the way that the patient wanted it to look like.

 RESULTS-  The transplanted hair will fall out from the bald spot or that area within a week and the new hair will start to grow in that spot within 3 months. The normal hair growth is about 0.25 to 0.5 per month. Major complications are extremely rare in transplantation process.

Technique of hair transplant–

• FUT – Follicular unit transplantation.
• FUE- Follicular unit extraction.

This two surgery are done on an outpatient basis and it is conducted under local anaesthesia, this two procedure are different and price may vary on the basis of it. Now a days most of the people prefer FUE method for hair transplant in Ahmedabad.
